Set against a rich crimson field, this hand-knotted Kashan rug presents a symmetrical, architectural design evoking a garden framed by sacred architecture. It is woven with a wool pile on a cotton foundation.

Composition

A pointed arch, paired columns and a suspended lamp-like motif frame a flowering vase and scrolling foliage. Together, these elements recall the imagery of Paradise associated with the wider Persian and Islamic prayer-carpet tradition.

Flowering stems and stylised blossoms soften the architectural symmetry. A broad, deep-blue floral border encloses the field, framed by narrower decorative bands.

Palette

Crimson contrasts with deep navy and blue-green, while turquoise, ivory, soft pink and muted gold bring light and detail to the design. The balance of warm and cool tones gives definition to the intricate drawing across the field and borders.

Condition

The cotton fringes show wear and areas of damage. The pile and foundation are otherwise in good overall condition.

A branching Tree of Life occupies the central field, populated by birds and surrounded by an intricate arrangement of blossoms, including peony- and lotus-like forms. The curvilinear drawing extends across the field in a densely worked composition, with changes in colour used to distinguish individual leaves, flowers and decorative elements.

Palette

Red, dusty rose, sage green and ivory form the principal palette, with numerous tonal variations visible throughout the floral and botanical details. The lustre of the silk causes the colours to shift subtly according to the direction of the pile and the changing light.


Condition

The rug remains in good structural condition, with visible wear to the cotton fringes consistent with its age and use.

Characterised by its intricate geometric ornament and richly contrasting colours, this contemporary Baluch rug brings together stylised floral forms and architectural motifs in a distinctive, vertically arranged composition. Its vivid blues, deep reds and ivory detailing create a striking interplay of colour and pattern, giving the traditional design vocabulary a bold, expressive character.

Composition

The design is organised into two visually distinct sections. The upper register features a near-symmetrical arrangement of architectural-looking forms, with repeated vertical elements and geometric detailing that introduce an intriguing sense of structure.

Beneath this, a sequence of large geometric floral medallions develops along the central axis, surrounded by angular branching motifs. Their generous scale contrasts with the smaller, densely arranged ornaments of the surrounding borders.

Multiple decorative borders frame the composition, bringing together repeated floral and geometric forms that create rhythm and visual continuity throughout the rug.

Palette

Characterised by its open floral drawing and quiet sense of balance, this contemporary Afghan runner reinterprets the Ziegler design vocabulary through an elongated format. Large-scale floral forms and restrained colouring giving the traditional design a particularly soft and understated character, particularly suited to contemporary and neutral interiors.


Composition

Large palmettes, blossoms and scrolling vines are arranged symmetrically along a central axis, creating a composition that develops naturally along the length of the runner.

The motifs are generously scaled but surrounded by open space, allowing each form to remain distinct rather than creating a densely patterned surface.

A cream floral border frames the central field, while the near-symmetrical arrangement gives the composition a balanced rhythm from either direction.

Palette

The palette is restrained, pairing a muted blue-grey field with warm cream and oatmeal motifs. The resulting contrast between cool and warm tones allows the floral drawing to remain clearly defined without becoming visually dominant.

Visible abrash, the subtle tonal variation that occurs across the field, moves between slate grey, soft denim blue and cooler silver-grey, giving the ground depth movement and a gentle ethereal appearance.

This contemporary Afghan kilim draws on the geometric design vocabulary associated with the Maimana weaving tradition of northern Afghanistan and was selected for the strength of its design as much as for the quality of its making. The relationship between colour, geometry, repetition and variation gives the piece a distinctive visual character.


Composition

Repeated stepped geometric medallions establish the underlying rhythm of the design, but close inspection reveals that they are not mechanically identical. Variations in colour, proportion and internal arrangement animate the repetition, giving the composition a sense of movement and individuality.

Palette

The kilim is distinguished by a bold polychrome palette structured through strong warm–cool contrasts. A predominantly red ground is set against blues and greens, with smaller passages of orange, ochre, ivory and soft pink bringing further variation across the composition.
