Sino-Hereke Tree of Life Silk Rug, 1980s
Dimensions: 90 × 152 cm
Year: 1980s
Material: Natural Silk on Cotton
Knot Density: 16×16
Classification: Oriental, Chinese
This exquisite prayer rug represents a pivotal era in late 20th-century weaving. During the 1980s, master weavers in China began to reinterpret the legendary "Hereke" designs of the Ottoman courts. The result is a piece that marries the technical precision of Chinese silk-work with the soulful, ancient symbolism of the Mihrab (Prayer Niche) and the Tree of Life.
Composition
The central field features a sprawling, multi-tonal Tree of Life, symbolic of eternal growth and the connection between the earthly and the divine. Birds perch among a dense thicket of blossoming peonies and lotuses, rendered with a clarity only possible through such a high-resolution weave.
Palette
The rug is defined by a sophisticated palette of red, dusty rose, sage green and ivory and exhibits a delicate tonal graduation, typical of vintage and antique silks that have mellowed gracefully over the years.
Condition & Authenticity
At Rosewood Gallery, we believe the history of a textile is told through its lived experience. This piece remains in optimal structural condition, while the cotton fringes show authentic wear, a testament to its four-decade journey.
We have chosen to preserve these edges in their original vintage stage. However, should you prefer a formal restoration, we are available to discuss bespoke options.
