This contemporary Afghan kilim draws on the geometric design vocabulary associated with the Maimana weaving tradition of northern Afghanistan and was selected for the strength of its design as much as for the quality of its making. The relationship between colour, geometry, repetition and variation gives the piece a distinctive visual character.
Composition
Repeated stepped geometric medallions establish the underlying rhythm of the design, but close inspection reveals that they are not mechanically identical. Variations in colour, proportion and internal arrangement animate the repetition, giving the composition a sense of movement and individuality.
Palette
The kilim is distinguished by a bold polychrome palette structured through strong warm–cool contrasts. A predominantly red ground is set against blues and greens, with smaller passages of orange, ochre, ivory and soft pink bringing further variation across the composition.

The rug is newly made and in excellent condition.
